What is cbd?

CBD or cannabidiol is a compound that comes from the cannabis plant and has natural properties whilst not being psychoactive. This key fact has radically increased its use and has resulted in updated legislation surrounding the products that it can be included in.

What is THC?

THC or to give its full title, Tetrahydrocannabinol is a main compound contained within the Cannabis plant. It’s levels are much higher in the Marijuana species than in Hemp and it is the psychoactive ingredient or rather, the one that gets you high. The presence of THC is prohibited in food, drink and cosmetics. Testing is required in order to demonstrate that your chosen ingredient is free from THC.

With such a variety of applications and potential uses, the correct packaging is essential and that is why Pont are at the forefront of this developing market, ready to advise on all aspects of packaging for new product developments.

The current state of the CBD market

Current legislation varies by country but there are already a wealth of products in the Food & Beverage sector from pre-mix drinks to CBD snacks and supplements.

CBD has been an unregulated food in the UK market and has recently been under scrutiny by the Food Standards Agency as a Novel Food. Going forward, all CBD food products on the market must only use a source of  CBD which is the subject of a validated Novel Food application. Each finished product must link to  the raw material application and be presented in the submitted dossier. Only products in the market  before 13th February 2020, with proof of sale, are permitted to continue to be sold whilst the Novel Food approval process is underway.

CBD can also be added to cosmetic creams and gels applied to the skin, making it a popular ingredients in the Personal Care market
