Recycled HDPE packaging materials

NON FOOD GRADE pACKAGING MATERIAL

HDPE is a more rigid plastic, it is robust and resistant to chemicals and moisture and it can also tolerate higher and lower temperatures so it’s often used for personal care items, cleaning products, or industrial fluids.

It is one of the easiest plastic polymers to recycle and is accepted at the majority of recycling centres throughout the world. It can be recycled whilst maintaining stable quality and similar technical performance.

That is why, as well as looking at bio-based HDPE, we would also urge our customers to consider using products made of recycled HDPE

Choose Your Percentage Of HDPE plastic

When recycled HDPE is used to make a container there will generally be some discolouration compared to virgin HDPE. The extent of the discolouration depends upon the percentage of recycled content used but also can vary from one batch to the next.

However, this colour change is now more commonly seen and accepted in a variety of retail products in both HDPE and PET so rather than being viewed as lower quality, it is in fact an outward sign of the changes you are making towards more environmentally friendly packaging. It is also only obvious in paler colours of HDPE such as white or natural. Darker pigments mask the discolouration and it can’t be seen at all.

0% Recycled HDPE

This container is made using 0% recycled HDPE which means that the Dosing bottle is made entirely from virgin HDPE

The colour is very natural and can be perceived as being made from brand new material.

100% Recycled HDPE

This container is made using 100% recycled HDPE making it the most sustainable option for holding chemicals.

There is some discolouration due to the 100% of recycled material. Though it will not affect the use of the product inside.

Non Food Uses you can benefit from

Primarily used for chemicals and Liquids

Currently, as the collected HDPE could come from both food-grade and non-food-grade sources, the resulting recycled HDPE is not classified as food safe in the UK.

This narrows down the range of uses for the recyclate but as HDPE is such a robust and practical plastic, there are still plenty of industrial and chemical packaging products that can be created. HDPE has excellent barrier properties against moisture and also a wide range of chemicals including many types of:

• Acids
• Alcohols
• Aldehydes
• Esters
• Bases

The Features of recycled HDPE plastic

Created, Used, Recycled, recylced again.

Here at Pont, we follow industry developments closely so that we can offer our customers the best available options in sustainable materials and packaging solutions for successful recycling in a circular economy.

• Recycled HDPE offers very similar technical properties to virgin HDPE
• Products made using recycled HDPE are not classified as food grade, It is easily collected in domestic recycling and can be recycled several times with stable quality
• Recycled HDPE can be recycled again in the same stream as virgin HDPE
• Recycled HDPE uses less resources and less energy to produce than virgin HDPE
• For darker colours, Carbon Black Free pigments can be used so that the material can still be detected in the NIR sorting process.
• White, natural or pale recycled HDPE will show some discolouration and this can vary from one batch to another.

Your questions about Recycled HDPE, Answered here!

HDPE is one of the easiest polymers to recycle and is widely accepted at the majority of recycling centres.

However, the resulting containers made from recycled HDPE cannot currently be classed as food grade.

HDPE is widely used and is an excellent material for good moisture and oxygen barriers helping to store and protect many products for modern convenience. However, it can take centuries to decompose which is why the material must be recycled as many times as possible to support a circular economy and reduce the amount of virgin HDPE that is manufactured.

Where glass and metal can be recycled almost infinitely without loss of quality, plastics are thought to only be suitable for recycling once or twice. Research continues though, with recent findings suggesting that HDPE can be recycled up to 10 times.

One of plastic’s most defining characteristics is it’s durability and it’s resistance to bacteria. These two features make plastic great for storage but are also why HDPE cannot biodegrade easily. In fact, it can take centuries.
